Opening the hood is an excellent first DIY win. The cabin handle releases the main latch; a second latch at the front keeps the hood from simply flying open. Two stages, one good reason. I would get comfortable with this before attempting any under-hood job.
Easy to learn, worth doing carefully: the final latch check matters as much as opening it.
Before I reach for a tool
I read the whole job first. Then I get the car, the parts and myself ready.
- Park and secure the car before reaching beneath the hood
- Switch the engine off
- Let the engine compartment cool
Secure the car before working
The owner publication’s automatic-transmission preparation is parking brake applied, selector in P, engine off, and wheels blocked. Keep clothing and tools clear of moving parts. Running-engine work needs adequate ventilation and is outside this opening procedure.
Keep ignition sources away
Keep flames, smoking materials and sparks away from the battery and fuel-related components.
Inside first, outside second
Two releases, one opening
1 · Inside the cabin
Pull the handle below the left side of the dash.
2 · At the front
Move the second release toward vehicle LH, then lift until the cylinders support the hood.
Pull the cabin release
Find the hood-release handle below the left-hand side of the instrument panel and pull it.
Release the secondary latch
At the front edge of the hood, locate the secondary release lever. Push it toward the vehicle’s left-hand side—the arrow is toward your right when you face the car from the front.
Lift and confirm support
Raise the hood until the lift cylinders support it. Check that it stays securely open before reaching into the engine compartment.
The closing act deserves a check
Clear the area
Remove tools and loose items and check that no person or object is in the closing path.
Lower and latch
Lower the hood and confirm it closes fully and latches properly. If it does not, resolve the obstruction or latch fault before driving.
What I check before wrapping up
- No tools or loose objects remain in the engine compartment
- The hood is fully closed and securely latched
