ROOM TO GROW.

A larger body and engine bay broaden the Mustang formula. A big-block 390 becomes available, and the Shelby GT500 joins the story.

A long hood, a short rear deck, and a remarkably personal idea of performance. The original Mustang offered a choice of body styles, engines, and equipment that let the same basic car become a daily driver, a boulevard cruiser, or a competition machine.

IDENTIFY THE CONFIGURATION.

A model year is the starting point. Confirm the body style, engine, transmission, axle, market, and factory packages before comparing specifications or ordering parts. A restored or modified Mustang may no longer match its original build.

OWNERSHIP NOTES.

Inspect the cowl, floor pans, torque boxes, shock towers, rear frame rails, and trunk drop-offs. Verify engine and body identification against year-specific records. Restoration quality and structural integrity matter more than fresh paint.

The imported 2016 workshop manual is not a substitute for this model year’s service information. Use the correct factory publication.
