BUYING A S550 MUSTANG.

A structured starting point for evaluating a car. These editorial checks help organize an inspection; they are not a valuation or a guarantee of condition.

KNOW THIS GENERATION.

Check service records, cooling and fluid condition, gearbox operation, and evidence of track use or tuning. Verify the exact engine, transmission, axle, and brake package before following a workshop procedure.

The launch lineup included a V6, turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost, and 5.0L GT. The GT350 introduced a 5.2L flat-plane-crank V8. The 2018 update revised the GT powertrain and added a ten-speed automatic option; the later GT500 used a dual-clutch transmission.

TAKE IT ONE CHECK AT A TIME.

Checks are temporary and reset when you reload. Print the page to take notes beside the car.

ORIGINAL, RESTORED, OR MODIFIED?

These are different purchase decisions. An original car needs evidence of provenance. A restored car needs evidence of workmanship. A modified car needs a documented combination of compatible parts, tuning, and supporting systems. A desirable badge cannot answer those questions on its own.

Compare the vehicle with its period Ford reference, then use the applicable manual for technical checks. For modern cars, check NHTSA recalls separately; a VIN decode does not show an individual car’s open recalls.
