Generation 05 · 2005–2014

BACK TO THE FUTURE

THE CHAPTER IN CONTEXT.

The 2005 car launched with a 4.0L V6 or three-valve 4.6L V8. The 2010 body update preceded the 2011 engine changes. The 2012–13 Boss 302 focused on road-course performance, and the 2013–14 GT500 used a supercharged 5.8L V8.

BUYING & OWNERSHIP.

Match service information to the engine and model year. Inspect clutch and gearbox operation, rear-axle noise, water entry, and modifications. Three-valve and Coyote engines have different procedures and service concerns.

Use the exact year and configuration when sourcing parts or maintenance instructions. Options, engine swaps, and regional differences can change applicability.

YEAR BY YEAR.

2005

S197 resets the shape

An all-new platform brings strong first-generation styling cues. A 4.0L V6 and three-valve 4.6L V8 define the regular lineup.

2006

The retro-modern formula

The S197 coupe and convertible continue. Appearance packages and aftermarket conversions should be identified separately from factory trim levels.

2007

Shelby returns

The Shelby GT500 brings supercharged 5.4L V8 power. GT, V6, and Shelby configurations require their own specifications and service references.

2008

A restrained Bullitt

Bullitt returns with understated styling and a revised GT-based package. Shelby offerings expand the performance end of the range.

2009

The first S197 body closes

The original S197 exterior reaches its final model year. The following year changes the body before the major 2011 powertrain updates.

2010

New shape, familiar engines

A substantial exterior and interior update arrives. Do not confuse this styling change with the 2011 introduction of the Coyote V8.

2011

The Coyote arrives

The GT gains the 5.0L Coyote V8, and the V6 changes to a 3.7L unit. Six-speed transmissions accompany the new regular powertrains.

2012

Boss 302 reborn

The Boss 302 returns with a naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 and road-course focus. The Laguna Seca version adds further track-oriented changes.

2013

The 5.8L Shelby

The GT500 moves to a supercharged 5.8L V8. Updated styling also distinguishes the final two S197 model years.

2014

S197 farewell

The fifth generation reaches its final year. GT, V6, and GT500 remain distinct choices ahead of the independent-rear-suspension S550.
