Starting System
Inspection and Verification
Diagnostics in this manual assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. REFER to: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
1. Verify the customer concern.
2. Check the battery for loose, damaged or corroded connections.
3. Check the generator for loose, damaged or corroded connections.
4. Check the battery condition and state of charge. REFER to: Battery (414-01) .
5. Remove the accessory drive belt. REFER to: Accessory Drive Belt (303-05C Accessory Drive - 5.0L 32V Ti-VCT/5.0L Ti-VCT V8 (308kW/418PS), Removal and Installation). Verify the crankshaft and each of the components driven by the accessory drive belt rotate and are not seized or damaged.
6. If any aftermarket accessories have been added to the vehicle, make sure they are properly wired.
7. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding.
